Deer Valley. That only should be enough to entice ski lovers around the world. It’s one of the best ski resorts in the US and the world- and that’s not throwing away big words. Deer Valley is ranked yearly amongst the top 10% ski resorts in the US. The resort benefits from top amenities and can be considered a luxury resort for those loving to ski and the mountains, but it doesn’t mean it’s not an affordable destination for all types of tourists. To give you an idea about how classy this resort is, you should know that it was used during the 2002 Winter Olympics, when it hosted a couple of interesting trials, like the alpine slalom. The resort has some limitations in terms of styles, as it is one of the places where snowboarding is still prohibited.
If you’re lucky, you could see live events organized by the International Ski Federation in Deer Valley, as the location is often used for national and international contests and trials. Deer Valley is positioned pretty close to other ski resorts and thus the competition with them is pretty intense. But Deer Valley has on its side class and a couple of luxury services which you won’t find in the resorts around. For example, you can benefit from ski valets and parking shuttles- both for free, as well as home high end shops in boutiques hosted by the main lodge of the resort. In the same compound, there are spa and luxury accommodation facilities.
One thing you won’t have to worry about at Deer Valley is overcrowding. The resort has a cap of 6.500 tickets per day, so you won’t have to wait interminably in lines or watch your six all the time when going down a slope. This is also quite positive if you intend to blend your skiing with long walks- there won’t be too many people to disturb you. The resort has 113 runs, with a little over a quarter being reserved for beginners, about 40% for intermediate skiers and about 30% for advanced skiers. The skiable area is very generous in terms of size- almost 2100 acres, with the longest run having a distance of 4.5 km. While there’s no night skiing, you can take many runs during the day, as the lift capacity is of 46.500 skiers per hour.
The resort has a very complex and varied system of transport, including a gondola, 2 double chairlifts, 5 triple chairlifts and 11 high speed quadruple chairlifts, amongst others. As a token of the resort’s quality, Deer Valley was awarded 5 awards for being the best ski resort in the US by readers of SKI magazine. The latest being in 2011, the poll takes into consideration grooming, weather, the quality of the food served, lodging and many more.
Deer Valley is located around 60 km east of Salt Lake City, thus being reachable quite easy. The actual resort is part of Park City, Utah, which is one of the most important touristic and cultural attractions in the US, as it has three great ski resorts and hosts, every year, the Sundance Film Festival. The area has mild summers with quite cold nights, while the winters are very cold and especially snowy. On top of everything, Park City (with Deer Valley included) was named one of US’s top 20 prettiest cities, so it’s definitely worth a shot.
